  Rage against the machine

Rage against the machine     Rage against the machine is a four member band from L.A. (California). For the most part, their music is about politics in the USA, problems about it, and also social problems.   About the Band:   Zack de la Rocha- vocals   Zack de la Rocha was born in 1970 in Long Beach. His parents splitted up when he was 1; Then he lived at his mothers place.

First he visited his father during the weekend, but his father was very religious (he wasn't allowed to eat anything, during the weekend cause of the holy Bibel, his Father thought). He couldn't do that, so he decided to rest at his real home. During the school he was well known, in scenes like punk rock, and heavy metal. He sang in a band named "Hardstance". A few years later, as he started freestyle rapping in clubs he met  Tom Morello, Brad Wilk  and Tim Commerford. That was the foundation of "RATM"   Tom Morello- Guitar   Tom Morello born in New York on May 30 of 1964 is the guitarist of the band.

He grew up in Libertyville. His mother Mary Morello established the organisation "Parents of Rock" which was against censorship. His father was a Guerrilla fighter. Tom's education wasn't the best first. He went to a primary school in Libertyville. He always wanted to play guitar, but as he learned C-Dur and things like that, he didn't want to play the guitar any longer, he was full of playing any instruments.

A few years later he studied the guitar in a university. Tom practised playing the guitar in L.A. where it's easy to establish a rock band. As he met Zack "Rage against the machine" was established.   Brad Wilk- Drums Brad was born in Portland in 1968.

He possibly is the "most silence" artist of the band. Probably one of the reasons is that he's not very interested in politics. He's in the band, cause of music, and not cause of the politic opinion which is mentioned by RATM. Brad loves to travel around in foreign countries and he speaks a lot of languages. In 2000 at the "Battle of L.A.

Tour" he sang a Hebraic song. As he self says "I just wish sometimes I could be a fuckin' asshole" shows that he's very sensitive.   Timothy Commerford- Bass His father helps building a spaceship, that's the reason why he isn't at home very often. His mom died when he was 20. He loved to write down poetries, and facts. He hates the CIA and police cause of their handling with society.

Timothy says that his pictures which he painted are too cruel to show them to the public society. One other thing to know is that he changes his surname for every album. The last name he chose was Simmering T. Why "RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE"   The "machine" attacks the media propaganda system of the state. Not only the "yes voters" are attacked with the lyrics, it concerns also the unrechtmäßige Autoritätsausübung.   The "rage" actually stands for their politic opinion.

You'll have to sort it as "left-politics"; Mostly "left politics" concerns the lower class of society (Untere Bevölkerungsschicht), which means the representation of the truth of live. Also regarding (bezüglich) the politic system in the US "the machine" is to take one's anger out on it!   The "against" shows that they're really against the U.S. politics, the wars and the massacres.  Most of their songs had been produced in 2000/01 during the presidential election and the tragic terrorism attack of Al Kaida (WTC)     They support public demonstrations or token strikes (Warnstreiks), they also play benefits concerts or give their personal statements about latest questions about everything.   Concert Controversy   Quarrels at or about RATM in the USA is a normal thing.

When Tim burnt an America flag at a Woodstock-Festival many patriots where horrified. They saw only the destroying but not the irony meaning against the American patriotism. In 1997Ratm had to absolve a concert in "The George Washington" but the responsible (zuständig) sheriff tried to cancel it. He said that the music is radical, militant, and against the publicity. But he had no chance, the concert took place and they started the concert with the cover "Fuck tha police" Zack de la Rocha spoke to the audience, "There's no crueler thing as a pig with political effort (bestrebung). We take his comment as an insult (beleidigung).

Everybody knows that the US-Police got outta control. There were many conservative cities where the situation was like that!" Zack often uses the breaks in his concerts to talk about problems. Here the example to "Bullet in the head":   We'd like to pay your attention! I'm gonna tell you that the US Government is starting a 2nd Vietnam in south Mexico. I'd like to make clear cause we think the media can't. They have no objective meaning. They try to hide the brutal reality.

They try to hide the death of millions of people. These people should get weapons to fight against the dictatorship. You'll see, at the moment many US soldiers are shipped to battlefields to make war against defenceless people. Everything is supported by the US-Government. We think that these people should know that. We have to understand that and we should stop this.

"So are you standin' in line? You believin' the lies? You bowin' down to this flag? You gotta bullet in your head??"
