  Alice's adventures in wonderland

Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland   The Author: Lewis Carroll (1832 - 1898) is a pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson who was born on 27th January, 1832 in Yorkshire. From 1855 to 1881 he was a mathematical lecturer at Oxford, where he was a somewhat eccentric and withdrawn character. He was most comfortable when with children, especially little girls in whose company his usual stammer completely disappeared. His most famous works are „Alice's Adventures in Wonderland“ (published in 1865) which he wrote to entertain Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, and „Alice Through the Looking-Glass which appeared in 1872. Lewis Carroll wrote many nonsense poems and books, as well as mathematical works which appeared under his own name. He died of bronchitis in his sisters' home in Guildford on 14th July, 1898.

    Summary:   As the book opens, Alice its on the riverbank with her sister, feeling very bored and sleepy. She sees a White Rabbit run by, talking about how his lateness. She gets up and runs after him and follows him down a rabbit hole. She sees the White Rabbit running and chases after him. She loses it and finds herself in a hall full of locked doors. She finds a little key and sees that it fits a tiny door behind a curtain that leads to a lovely garden.

The fan of the Rabbit causes her to shrink and she can walk through the door. She meets a lot of characters and has a lot of adventures. At the end of the book, Alice awakens by the side of the river next to her sister.       Some Of The Characters:   Alice: An English girl about seven with an active imagination. She is polite and kind- hearted and genuinely concerned about others. And she is quite stubborn.

  Cheshire-Cat: A grinnig cat with the possibility to appear and disappear at will who claims to be mad.   White Rabbit: A nervous character who is always in a hurry. He loves contradicting the King.   Queen of Hearts: A monstrous, violently dominating woman.   King of Hearts: An incompetent and ineffectual ruler, dominated by his wife   Duchess: An odd and mean woman who is really ugly   Tweedledum and Tweedledee: Two little fat brothers dressed as schoolboys who like dancing and poetry. They are petty and cowardly.

  Humpty Dumpty: An easily-offended guy, who thinks he is a master of words. He is rude and foolish     Words:   eccentric = exzentrisch withdrawn = verschlossen, zurückgezogen stammer = Stammeln, Stottern Dean = Dekan genuinely = echt, aufrichtig to contradict = widerprechen petty = klein, gering cowardly = feig; niederträchtig rude = unverschämt, frech duchess = Herzogin
